Once a document/manuscript has been assessed and accepted for publication, the real work begins. • Use a multiple-pass technique to move smoothly from assessment through substantive editing and copyediting phases
  • Edit from the reader’s perspective as well as the writer’s
  • Set the focus of a document from the opening paragraph
  • Direct the reader to the information he or she needs
  • Set and maintain the appropriate tone
  • Recognize and correct poor structure and proportion
  • Choose appropriate formatting techniques
